Français: For the month of December students will watch and listen to Christmas animated stories and songs. They will build vocabulary and fluency as we reread the stories and sing the songs together. French Grammar focus: Present tense of verbs and Past tense (Passé Composé.) Media Literacy: Discussing the messages of the animated stories and songs - use of images & colour to help the audience visualize the meaning of the words/phrases. Technology project: Students will create their own Christmas theme slideshow in French.
English Language: Students will be reading and writing persuasive texts! The power of words and descriptive detail will be our focus. English Word work: Students have been placed in small groups according to their Spelling needs. We work on short vowels/long vowels, blends, digraphs and suffixes/prefixes; all depending on their particular area of need.
Math:
We will continue working on the DATA MANAGEMENT strand for the month of December. Discussing different types of graphs, what makes a good graph and the reasons for collecting, organizing and analyzing data.
We will also do some work with adding money(coin and bill amounts). Working with money is always a challenging task, so your help at home would be greatly appreciated!

Count up the extra change you get after a purchase
While at a store use estimation skills to add up the total cost of items being purchased (for grade 3, we go up to $10.00, for grade 4, we go up to $100.00
Being comfortable with estimating can help a child understand reasonable answers. They can often do the following strategy using mental math and it can be applied to adding coins/bills:

GRADE 4:Students will continue to learn about the various land forms that create Canada's landscape.
Religion/Family Life
This month we will discuss the rituals of Advent and Christmas. We will make connections to scripture such as the Nativity Story. Students will learn about the significant colours and images that are symbolic in the church at this time. Students will learn about Jesus' heritage through the tradition of the Jesse Tree.
Music: In music, students are continuing preparations for the Christmas concert. They will also continue to work with pitch and rhythm using the new glockenspiels while learning simple Christmas carols. FYI: For the Christmas concert the students in our class are asked to wear dark coloured pants/skirt (black or brown) and a yellow top(t-shirt, blouse, sweater.)
Dates to remember: Dec 3: Christmas in Muskoka at the armouries Dec 8: Christmas lunch - students are asked to bring own drink and $2.00 to go toward our Christmas meal. Dec 12: Advent mass in the gym at 9:45 Dec 16: Christmas play performances - more specific info to come home soon Dec 19: Last day...woohoo! Please encourage your child to bring home indoor shoes to be cleaned over the holidays.
